Make a Living without Selling Your Soul
Make a Living without Selling Your Soul If money were no object, most people would be in different careers. At least that has been my experience coaching clients one-on-one and taking listener calls on my SiriusXM show. Ironically, following the money doesnt offer the comfort people seek. Can they pay you enough to do a job you dont like? Good thing there is an alternative. You really can make a great living without selling your soul. In fact, you will find a more sustainable income when you listen to yourself and follow-through on the thoughts and ideas that come to you. Look at Facebook, Google, Apple all of these companies started with an idea, a thought, a vision. The founders of these companies took these ideas seriously they valued their genius and used that as the cornerstone for making a great living. I read the back stories on successful people all the time very few if any succeeded because they were trying to get rich quick. Instead, they had a mission, a purpose to their work they were trying to make life be tter for others and money (lots of it!) was the natural offshoot to products or services that did just that. If you dont believe me, read Patricia Aburdenes new book Conscious Money. Patricia is a best known for spotting mega trends. Her first best-seller Megatrends 2000 sold over 14 million copies worldwide. Since then Patricia has noticed a new trend: Conscious Capitalism. Its an approach that continues to grow even during the recent Great Recession. Companies that have a higher purpose beyond profit, who treat their employees, customers, the environment, etc. well are outperforming companies focused on only profit alone. Its a revolution I for one am excited about! To make it in this new age, Patricia points out the Creativity is our most valueable skill. Innovating new ways to doing things is something everyone now has the power to do, not just experts or a certain powerful few at the tops of companies or governements. CEOs are recognizing this too and 1500 of them cited creativi ty as their most sought after talent in employees in a landmark IBM study. So what does this mean to you? Its time you start cultivating your ow creative RD as Patricia calls it.Heres my take on the steps Patricia shares. I recommend you buy her book (find the link on my FB fan page) and make it work for you too:Make space/time in your life for just being, not doing. Filling your schedule up with to dos is distracting. Allow for quiet time during your work day. Patricia recommends starting a mindfulness practice like meditation or yoga.Notice where you get your most creative thoughts. For some its the shower, for others, its a long run.Harvest the ideas you get from this practice. Keep a notebook or smart phone handy. Inspiration can come in a brainstorm and youll want to be ready to capture it.I have never felt more strongly that we all have the answers we need inside of us. Its the basis of my Soul Search work. Put yourself in the drivers seat of your career. Follow the inspiratio n that comes to you and youll soon see that your own creativity is the best and most sustainable source of income you could imagine.(Photo courtesy of flikr user Tax Credits.)

Got Career ADD Use Creativity To Stand Out To Employers - Work It Daily
Got Career ADD Use Creativity To Stand Out To Employers - Work It Daily Call me crazy, but I watched Oprahâs show on Sunday for the first time this week. True to my ADD nature, I decided to veer off my Career ADD Afflictions blog post to comment on what I gleaned from this very impressive show. I couldn't resist and had to jump on it before my enthusiasm for the topic (and memory of the contents, although I took copious notes) might disappear. I am sure many of you know exactly what Iâm talking about. One of my favorite authors, Daniel Pink, was being interviewed on his book A Whole New Mind. I got excited because I had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Pink as CEO of KidzArt several years ago, when my business partner and I arranged to have one of our franchisees bring a KidzArt class to his home for his children. In his book, he discusses the importance of honing oneâs creativity, so we thought it would be a great idea for him to experience firsthand how creativity could be developed through our amazing program. As a result, we received a wonderful endorsement. Mr. Pinkâs book made an immeasurable impact on me several years ago, and has held up ever since as the voice of the current future career/workplace. You see, Oprah gave a copy to over 4,000 Stanford graduates as her gift. So, from my perspective, it is imperative that everyone in career desperation or paralysis, read this book! So, you may ask what A Whole New Mind has to do with Career ADD. Everything. Why? Because one of the major assets we have, if we are diagnosed or have symptoms of ADD/ADHD, is creativity and big picture thinking. Apparently, there is not enough of it. Mr. Pink goes so far as to say the MFA or Master of Fine Arts is the new MBA! He notes the career/work force of the future must incorporate these elements to stay competitive. Employers are looking for how candidates stand out and can offer creative solutions to their companyâs challenges. Hey, thatâs us! Instead of it being a road block, we can use creativity to stand out and develop unique solutions. Are we not amazing creative problem-solvers? Inevitably, creative problem solving comes up as one the top five skills we choose to use in our next careers to be happy. Itâs how many of us are wired. Although some of you, like Mr. Pink may be âleft brainâ oriented â" in other words leaning more toward an analytical or systems approach to your work, many of the jobs associated with this orientation, including computer and accounting jobs, can be easily duplicated and sent overseas for much cheaper. This is great news for Career ADD folks because he says that we must incorporate or hone our creative, outside-the-box talents to remain competitive. Again, this is easy for many of us. So today, take some time to do these things: Write down all the times you can think of, in any of the jobs you have held, where you either provided or thought of (but may not have had the opportunity to share) a creative solution to a work challenge. If you were in a position to share a creative solution on the job â" write down the results. Spend some time with this and put in as much detail as you can. Tell a story, if you will. Write down any creative solutions to any challenge you can think of whether or not it was job-related. Perhaps, on a personal level, in a volunteer position, with a friend, with a spouse, with your children, etc. Congratulations, you now have the beginning of a conversation in a job interview where you have incorporated creative problem solving, better known as creativity, that can be translated to a job, that can help you stand out and even âbrandâ how you are different, and perhaps more valuable, to an employer or in your own business. And read the book A Whole New Mind. It will change your perspective, and maybe your life. Personally, Iâm hooked on all his books. If you are a young adult, check out JOHNNY BUNKO. Now, back to the Afflictions⦠How much have you spent on âcoachingâ with no results? Unfortunately, many coaches have good intentions, but have no idea how to help people with ADD/ADHD or its associated symptoms to define a career goal or explore possibilities. When it comes to career, few understand it takes more than just assessments and career systems to help us. It takes one to know one, right? I have been there, and I have over 22 years of career counseling experience and knowledge to back it up. If you need it, I can help change your life, give you hope, help you develop your confidence and define the next step in your career or work life. 5 Things I Wish I Had Known When I Was 30
5 Things I Wish I Had Known When I Was 30 Most people dread turning 40. I cant wait Seriously My 30s were a time of significant growth, professionally and personally. There are lessons I learned during my 30s that brought me peace, positivity, and progress towards achieving my life goals. These lessons allowed me to recognise my power and design a life I love, and theyre things I could have benefited from knowing even well before I hit my third decade.Lesson 1 Create your own definition of success.Never compare your life to everyone else as a benchmark for success. Despite having a great job, amazing friends, being in good health and starting a life in London I remember turning 30 and thinking I welches a failure. I felt like a failure because I felt like a society reject because I wasnt married, with two kids and living in the country. During my 30s I learned to be honest with myself about what I wanted from life, create my own definition of success and leid try to conform to how ot hers thought I should be living my life.Lesson 2 Know when to hit the eject button.Rather than hitting the eject button, sometimes we remain too long in bad situations and have toxic people in our lives. When I was a candidate for a big job promotion and needed to focus on my career, I stopped socialising with people that were negative influences. I surrounded myself with positive individuals that had similar interests and goals. To accomplish our goals and live productive lives, we need to hit the eject button and eliminate the waste in our lives.Lesson 3 Create options for yourself. In my 30s I learned to create options for myself rather than waiting to be told my options. Dont stay in a bad job or wait to be told if you are going to get a promotion. Always interview even if you like your job. Interviewing allows you to make connections and understand the many options in your industry. Leverage recruiters to understand the salary and benefits offered for people in your role at othe r companies. Having options will give you peace and always ensure you are in a position of power.Lesson 4 Balance is a myth. Instead, prioritize.I used to always tried to achieve a work / life balance but the reality is that there will never be a perfect balance. Balance is a myth. Rather than striving for balance...I prioritised. Priorities can shift on a daily, if not hourly basis. Sometimes things just need to get done and all your effort must focus on that priority. There are times where I need to re-prioritise and focus on work project, my gym routine, time with my family. Prioritising allowed me to focus and achieve my prioritised tasks very well rather than spreading myself thin trying to achieve a balance. Prioritise, focus and you will achieve great things.Lesson 5 Appreciate the people you love. One of the most important lessons I learned is that tomorrow is not guaranteed. Be sure to create time with loved ones. Life is about creating memories. Get off the hamster wheel of life and enjoy the people you love. --With over 20 years on Wall Street,Cecilia is a tech start up founder, a senior women working in FinTech, and a champion of diversity in technology.
